Calvert Hall principal retires

Calvert Hall College principal Louis Heidrick plans to retire at the end of the current academic year after 48 years at the Catholic boys' high school.

Heidrick was the first Calvert Hall principal who was not a member of the De La Salle Christian Brothers, the religious group that founded the school in 1845. He started at Calvert Hall as a social studies teacher and rose to assistant principal for academics and for student affairs before being named principal in 2001.

"I've loved every minute," Heidrick, 69, said Friday. "It's hard to leave something you love at any time, but it's a good time for the institution and for me personally."

Brother Thomas Zappo, the Calvert Hall president, said the school would undertake an extensive search for a new principal.
