The Towson University Police Department is seeking accreditation from a national law-enforcement standards agency and inviting public comment about its practices and procedures.
The comment session is scheduled for 5 p.m. Aug. 5 in the administration building, room 424. Those who can't make the session may call 410-704-6531 from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. that day and speak directly with an assessor from the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies.
Comments must be limited to 10 minutes and address the department's performance. Accreditation from the commission is meant to improve the department's approach to public safety, streamline operations and recognize "professional excellence," according to a commission website.
“The students, faculty, staff and visitors to Towson’s campus expect and deserve to be served and protected by a police department that is current and operates in line with the best practices of the police profession," Poilice Chief Bernard J. Gerst said in a statement. "By undergoing the intense scrutiny and evaluation of the accreditation process we want to assure the public we serve that we meet those challenging standards."
