A Baltimore County man was charged with first-degree murder and assault for allegedly strangling his roommate with electrical cords on Thursday evening, according to Baltimore County police.

When police arrived, they found Calvin Fernanda Phair, 47, performing CPR on the victim, Elijah McKeith Smalls, 39, police said. County emergency medical personnel continued to give Smalls medical care, but he was pronounced dead at the unit block of Walden Cypress Court in Woodlawn.

Police said the two roommates had an argument that became violent and they both fell onto the floor. Phair is alleged to have taken nearby electrical cords and strangled Smalls, who then went into cardiac arrest. Phair was being held without bail at the Baltimore County Detention Center.
