A 36-year-old Edgemere man has been arrested and charged with multiple sex offenses after meeting a 13-year-old boy through a social media smartphone application and meeting him for sex in Essex in February, Baltimore County police said Thursday.
He is also charged with transferring HIV to the boy, according to court records.
Police said Steven Douglas Podles, of the 7200 block of River Drive, began chatting with the unidentified boy through the application "Grindr," which advertises itself as an "all-male location-based social network."
Podles was using a profile on the application under the name "Steve," in which he listed his age as 30, police said.
In February, the two agreed to "meet to engage in sexual activity" in Essex, police said.
Podles then drove to an area near the boy's home, where the two engaged in unprotected sexual activity, police said.
The boy's parents learned of the meeting several months later and alerted authorities, police said.
According to court records, Podles was charged in May with sexual solicitation of a minor, transferring HIV to another person and a second-degree sex offense.
He has been released on $75,000 bail pending a trial, scheduled for Oct. 11, police said.
Police are asking anyone with information on Podles to contact them at 410-307-2020.
