A 21-year-old man was fatally wounded in an exchange of gunfire following a drug deal at a York Road gas station in North Baltimore late Wednesday night, Baltimore police said Thursday.
The shooting was one of two incidents of gunfire overnight. The second left three people wounded.
Surveillance video of the gas station incident, released by police to attract community tips about the suspect's identity, showed the victim, later identified as Deontay McKnight, and the suspect making a "hand to hand drug transaction" about 11:30 p.m. McKnight then began pumping gas at the station, in the 5100 block of York Road, before the suspect approached him and shot him multiple times in the upper body and stomach, police said.
McKnight slumped against a trash can at the gas pump, pulled out his own gun and fired back before dropping the gun in the trash can, police said. He later died at a local hospital.
T.J. Smith, a police spokesman, said police have had success identifying shooters in other recent incidents in the city by releasing video, and hope the footage of the gas station shooting, in the city's Radnor-Winston neighborhood, will also produce tips.
"We're lucky the gas pumps didn't explode" during the exchange of gunfire, he said.
McKnight, last week, had received probation before judgment for a handgun charge, according to online court records.
About 1 p.m. Thursday, three people were wounded in a separate shooting in the 1300 block of Sargent Street in the city's Washington Village/Pigtown neighborhood.
A 23-year-old man was shot in the torso, a 24-year-old man was shot in the arm and stomach, and a 31-year-old woman was shot in the thigh and torso, police said. All three were taken to a hospital. The men were listed in stable condition, and the woman was released, police said.
Another man was shot around 4 p.m. Thursday in the Douglass Homes public housing area in East Baltimore. The 26-year-old victim was shot in the torso and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Around 8:15 p.m., Malcolm Webb, 22, of the 5900 block of Cross Country Boulevard, was shot and killed in the 4800 block of Cordelia Avenue in Northwest Baltimore. Police are investigating the circumstances.
Police also said a 31-year-old man was pronounced dead from "trauma to the head" just after 8 a.m. Wednesday in the 400 block of South Monroe St. in Carrollton Ridge. A cause of death has not yet been determined by the medical examiner, but police said they are investigating the incident as a homicide.
