Man charged in fatal stabbing of Ottobar employee

Baltimore police charged a Parkville man Saturday in the stabbing of two Ottobar employees — one of them fatally — the day before, according to charging documents.

Nicholas Brandon Heath, 32, of the 2500 block of Windsor Road has been charged with first-degree murder in the stabbing death of Tom Malenski, 35, early Friday at the Remington concert venue.

Malenski, an employee of the bar in the 2500 block of N. Howard St., was attending a concert on his night off when he helped a co-worker break up a fight and removed a patron, according to police and the bar's owner. As he led the patron from the bar, Malenski was attacked by Heath, police said. According to charging documents, Malenski was stabbed in the neck. The other victim, a 33-year-old bar employee, suffered a laceration to his face.

Police said Malenski died at the Maryland Shock Trauma Center at 2:28 a.m. Friday.

In charging documents, police said interviews and a follow-up investigation led them to Heath as a suspect. Police did not identify the witnesses in the charging documents, citing the need to "protect the integrity" of the witnesses.

Heath was picked up in Woodstock and taken to the Baltimore homicide unit, where he confessed to the stabbings, according to charging documents. The documents did not suggest a motive for the attack.

In addition to first-degree murder, Health was charged with second-degree murder, first- and second-degree assault, and a weapons offense. He is being held at the Baltimore City Detention Center.

Online court records were not immediately available and it could not be determined whether Heath had an attorney. Court records show he has a history of weapons violations.

Mike Bowen, one of the owners of the Ottobar, said Friday that Malenski had worked at the venue for several years. He recalled Malenski as having "been a part of the music scene for a really long time. He will obviously be deeply missed."
