Light rail suspended at BWI airport because of suspicious item

Light rail service to BWI Marshall Airport has been suspended because of police and emergency activity, the Maryland Transit Administration announced Wednesday night.

A spokesman for the MTA police said his office received a call Wednesday around 10 p.m. about a suspicious itemand that units with the police and fire departments were on the scene.

“They treat any kind of unattended item with caution,” said Corporal Edward Bartlinski. “Obviously we don’t want anything to happen.”

He said it was not immediately clear what kind of suspicious object had triggered the initial call to police.

MTA spokesman Paul Shepard said service is expected to return to normal by Thursday morning. Meanwhile, light rail trains are stopping instead at the BWI business district station.
