Baltimore police arrest three in Fells Point triple shooting

Baltimore police said three men have been arrested in connection with a shooting inside a Fells Point bar.

Police have charged three men in the triple shooting early Saturday in a Fells Point bar that left one man in critical condition.

The shooting at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday followed an argument at the Santa Clara Bar and Restaurant, police said.

Melvin Zavala, 20, of the 7200 block of Gough St.; Nehemias Batista, 25, of Baby Bird Court in Halethorpe; and Argueta Andres, 24, of the 3000 block of Varder St., are each charged with attempted murder, police said. They were held at Central Booking pending bail hearings.

Bartender Nidia Juarez said a man she didn't know put on a plastic mask moments before the shooting. She said she threw herself to the floor early Saturday at the sound of gunshots. As she stayed hidden, she called 911.

When she rose, she said, three men had been shot.

She spoke through an interpreter outside the bar on South Bond Street. The interpreter was Santos Machado, a friend of the bar's owner.

After the shooting, she said, some 10 customers and employees fled.

Juarez said one victim, slumped at a table, was knocked to the floor by people running out.

An 18-year-old man was shot in the head, police said. He remained hospitalized Sunday in critical condition.

A 28-year-old man was shot in the upper body, police said. He was expected to survive.

A 20-year-old man was grazed in the left foot, police said. He declined treatment.

Juarez said she has worked nine years without incident at the Fells Point bar. Now, she said, she's afraid at work. TimPrudente1
