A 14-year-old boy was shot in the back near the Pimlico Race Track on Friday night, following a spike in youths killed this week.
The boy was found with a gunshot wound shortly before 11 p.m. in the 5700 block of Winner Ave., a couple blocks from Pimlico in the Glen neighborhood, police said. The boy told police he had been walking in the block when he heard gunfire and realized he had been shot.
He was expected to survive his injuries and anyone with information can call police at 410-396-2466. No suspect description was released by police.
Two 17-year-olds, Keith Powell and Adrian Gilliard, were shot and killed in Baltimore on Thursday and Tuesday, respectively. With their deaths, a dozen youths have been killed in Baltimore this year, surpassing last year's total of 10. The figure includes 3-year-old McKenzie Elliott, who was killed in a drive-by shooting in Waverly in early August.
Just three children died last year as a result of being shot, the lowest level in at least a decade. From 2006 to 2008, the 20 or more children were killed each year.
