There have been shootings at shopping malls over the years in Baltimore and across the country. But incidents like the one Saturday in Columbia — inside the mall and near large crowds — are relatively rare.
Jan. 25, 2014: A gunman and two employees of a Zumiez store are killed inside the Mall in Columbia.
Dec. 15, 2013: A lawyer is gunned down during a carjacking in the parking lot of the Mall at Short Hills in Paramus, N.J.
Dec. 11, 2012: Wearing tactical clothing and a hockey mask, Jacob Tyler Roberts, 22, killed himself and two other people at the Clackamas Town Center outside Portland, Ore.
Dec. 19, 2011: A 19-year-old man was shot and killed outside Towson Town Center. Police later described the shooting as a gang killing.
Nov. 11, 2011: Two people were killed in the Arundel Mills parking lot. The suspect was later killed as police tried to arrest him.
Dec. 5, 2007: Robert A. Hawkins, 19, killed himself and eight people and wounded four others inside Von Maur department store in the Westroads Mall in Omaha, Neb.
Feb. 12, 2007: An 18-year-old man fatally wounded five people at the Trolley Square Mall in Salt Lake City before being killed by police officers.
Nov. 18, 2006: Three people were wounded when two teens exchanged gunfire inside a crowded food court at the Westfield Annapolis mall.
Jan. 5, 2006: A merchant was shot and killed during a carjacking outside Security Square Mall.
Feb. 18, 2005: A 58-year-old science teacher was killed in the parking garage of Towson Town Center in an apparent robbery. The mall installed security cameras and additional lighting after the killing.
Dec. 18, 2001: A teenager was killed in the parking lot of the Owings Mills Mall in what police described as a drug deal gone wrong.
May 31, 1997: An off-duty police officer killed a fleeing robbery suspect inside the Hecht Co. store in the Annapolis Mall.
Dec. 23, 1995: A teenager shot and killed another youth during a fight inside a shopping mall in Salisbury on the Eastern Shore. Two people were also wounded in the shooting.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
