Inmate working to demolish Maryland House of Correction dies

An inmate working on the deconstruction of the Maryland House of Correction in Jessup suffered a medical emergency and died on a scaffolding system Monday, authorities said.

The 54-year-old inmate, who has not yet been publicly identified, collapsed on the scaffolding and was pronounced dead on the scene, Anne Arundel County fire department and Maryland Department of Public Safety and Correctional Services officials said. No cause of death was available Tuesday.

Several dozen inmates are working on the deconstruction of the notorious House of Correction, which was closed in 2007 after a correctional officer was fatally stabbed. The deconstruction, in which the building materials are being saved for reuse, began last month.
