The bones of a human hand and part of a lower arm were found in a residential neighborhood in Reisterstown on Wednesday by a landscaper, Baltimore County police announced Thursday.
The hand "appeared on the lawn" of a home in the 300 block of Hedgepocket Way as the man was doing work at the home, said Cpl. Cathy Batton, a police spokeswoman. The landscaper contacted police, who searched the area but did not locate any more remains, Batton said.
"We treat everything as a crime scene just in case it turns out to be one, but there's nothing at this point to indicate to us that this was a murder victim's hand," Batton said.
A medical examiner confirmed the hand and arm bones, which still had pieces of skin attached to them, were human on Thursday, Batton said. Police are hoping for more information from the examiner Friday that "may help guide our search for additional remains," Batton said.
The investigation is ongoing, Batton said.
"We're attempting to determine where it came from, how long it had been there, where the bones originated and who this individual was," Batton said.
