An active duty member of the U.S. Navy was fatally shot Wednesday night in the city's Lakeland neighborhood, one of four shooting incidents that night, police said.
The man, a 24-year-old in town visiting relatives, got out of a car with his brother near the intersection of Marbourne Avenue and Mallview Road when suspects pulled up beside them in their own vehicle and opened fire, police said.
The victim, who was found shot in the torso at about 8:42 p.m., has not yet been identified, and police are not sure of a motive. The victim's relative was not injured in the incident.
A second homicide occurred at about 11 p.m. in the 1400 block of E. Preston St. in the Oliver neighborhood. Officers responded to reports of shots fired and found the 26-year-old man lying in the street with multiple wounds to the head and torso. James Utley of the 1400 block of E. Lanvale St. was pronounced dead at 11:43 p.m. at Johns Hopkins Hospital.
Police also reported two non-fatal shootings on the same night.
A 22-year-old man was found shot several times at about 10 p.m. in the 3700 block of St. Victor St. in Brooklyn. He is being treated at an area hospital for wounds to the torso and lower body, police said.
Shortly after 11 p.m., officers responded to the night's fourth shooting, this one in the 2100 block of W. North Ave. in Mondawmin. They found a 27-year-old man suffering from several gun shot wounds to the torso that police said may have occurred during an argument.
