Two men were shot outside a Southwest Baltimore apartment where residents said six children were playing on Monday.
Officers were called just before 4 p.m. to the 2100 block of Eagle St. in Carrollton Ridge, where they found a 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to his leg, police said. Another man, a 23-year-old, was found shot in the leg and hand in the 1900 block of W. Baltimore St. a short time later.
Dorthy Umstead, 25, said her two children, her niece and three other children were in her home at the time. At first, she said, she thought it was a cap gun. But she sent the children upstairs before peering out her window.
Umstead recalled how the power had gone out on her block over the weekend, forcing the family outside in the summer heat. She shook her head at the thought that her children could have been in the line of fire.
"People don't think about the kids," she said.
Another neighbor, April Robinson-Hall, 45, said she had been at work when the shooting happened, but worried for her husband and her Shepard mix, Autumn, when she heard about it. She moved from Columbia to the Carrollton Ridge row home next door to Umstead about a year ago.
"It's not what I'm used to," she said. "It's got me shaken up, and I wasn't even here."
Robinson-Hall said she doesn't allow people to loiter around in front of her apartment, because "you don't know who's in the crowd that has something aimed at them."
"I ask them, 'Why are you in front of my window? Can y'all move down?'" she said.
Police have not released any information on a motive or suspect in the shooting. Southwestern District detectives are investigating, and anyone with information may call 410-396-2488.
