A man accused of shooting an off-duty police sergeant earlier this year pleaded not guilty to attempted murder at a brief court hearing Thursday.
Gregg Thomas, 34, is accused in a March attack on Sgt. Keith Mcneill as he sat in his truck outside a car shop on Belair Road. Thomas was taken into custody when he surrendered following a city-wide manhunt.
Mcneill was recently transferred from the Maryland Shock Trauma Center, according police spokeswoman Sgt. Sarah Connolly. The well-liked officer is now at another local hospital to continue his rehabilitation and faces several more surgeries, Connolly said.
Thomas appeared in court Thursday shackled and wearing a blue prison uniform and watched impassively as another defendant pleaded guilty in an unrelated case.
He did not speak during the hearing. His attorney said he wanted to plead not guilty and asked for a trial by jury. Thomas is due back in court in August.
The lawyer, Janice Bledsoe, declined to comment.
