Woman shot in cheek survives shooting

A woman was shot in the left cheek early Monday but was expected to survive, Baltimore police said.

The Northwest Baltimore shooting was the last in a violent weekend, where three people — including a teenager — were killed and eight people were injured in shootings in the city.

At 2:27 a.m., police said a 27-year-old woman walked into Sinai Hospital suffering from gunshot wounds to her left cheek and hand, police said. She was immediately taken into surgery for non-life threatening injuries, police said.

Investigators say the shooting took place in the 4700 block of Greenspring Ave. on the edge of the Cylburn neighborhood but police didn't have many more details.

On Sunday, a 27-year-old man was fatally shot in the 4000 block of Norfolk Ave., part of the Concerned Citizens of Forest Park neighborhood. On Saturday, six people were wounded and 15-year-old Deshaun Jones was killed in West Baltimore's Franklin Square after police said a shooting erupted over an illegal dice game in the 1500 block of W. Fayette St.

Friday night, a 21-year-old man was also killed in the 3100 block of Brendan Ave., police reported.

As of Monday morning, police say there have been 287 non-fatal shootings this year compared with 237 at this time last year — an increase of 21 percent. Homicides for 2013 are at 150, compared with 140 this time last year, a 7-percent increase.
