Man shot in Baltimore McDonald's after firing gun at armed security guard

A 44-year-old man was shot late Tuesday night after he fired a gun at an armed security guard in a Baltimore McDonald's, police said Wednesday afternoon.

Police said the man assaulted the guard and fired at least one shot in his direction before the guard pulled his own gun and shot him in the stomach.

The man was taken to an area hospital for treatment and is expected to be charged with attempted murder, assault and various gun-related charges, police said. Officials said the armed guard was not an off-duty police officer.

Police did not publicly disclose the shooting — which happened just before midnight as the restaurant in the 2500 block of W. Franklin St. was closing — until sending a Wednesday afternoon email to members of the media.

Police spokesman Sgt. Jarron Jackson said not letting the public know immediately was an "error" on the department's part, adding "we corrected it as soon as we realized."
