A man who implied he had a gun robbed two women outside a popular restaurant in Roland Park Tuesday night, getting away with one purse but failing to get a second when a victim fought back, Baltimore police said.

The robbery outside Petit Louis, a French bistro in the 4800 block of Roland Ave., has sparked concern in the upscale North Baltimore neighborhood. A deputy police major has visited the restaurant and community leaders have called the police commissioner directly.

Authorities said Commissioner Frederick H. Bealefeld III, would call the victims. “He’s made sure there’s going to be directed patrols,” said police spokesman Anthony Guglielmi.

Police said the attack occurred about 7:40 p.m. outside the restaurant. Guglielmi said the victims, who were not identified, had just left the restaurant. One woman was helping another into the front passenger seat of the car, parked on Roland Avenue, when a man approached from behind.

According to police, he said, “If you don’t want to get shot, I want your pocketbook.” Guglielmi said the man leaned into the car, grabbed a pocketbook from the floor and then tried to grab the pocketbook of the other woman, who was standing near the car door.

Police said that woman fought back. “He struggled for the second victim’s purse,” Guglielmi said. “She refused to give it over. He ran away.” Police did not say what was inside the purse the man did get. The victims told police they did not see a gun.

The manager of Petit Louis declined to comment on Wednesday. She referred calls to a publicist, who did not return calls.
