Paramedics responding to the scene of a 2-year-old child’s killing in Southeast Baltimore found the child’s mother lying in the fetal position next to the dead infant and holding a knife pointed at herself, according to charging documents.
Police on Wednesday said the mother, 32-year-old Nicole Fitzgerald, has been formally charged with killing son Paris Russell after being released from the hospital for treatment of wounds to her own neck. The boy, police said, died from “severe lacerations” to his neck.
Officers responded to the scene in the 1400 block of Broening Highway just before noon Sunday. In charging documents, police say that Fitzgerald told the paramedic that she had killed the baby, who was dressed in pajamas, the night before.
An officer ordered her at gunpoint to drop the knife; she did, but said she could not get up because she had swallowed pills and cut herself. Two kitchen knives were observed on the floor, and there was blood throughout the home, police said. There were others in the home when police arrived, and records show that they were taken to the homicide unit for questioning.
Neighbors have said that they often saw Fitzgerald outside with her son as he played on the sidewalk, and were shocked by the news.
Fitzgerald was charged with first-degree murder, child abuse resulting in death, and related charges and was being held without bond, court records show.
Paris is the fifth child age 2 or younger to be killed in Baltimore this year, the most since 2004. In each of the four previous cases, the child’s father or father figure was charged in the killing.
