Baltimore Police said Monday that a man shot by officers responding to a robbery call on Friday evening remains in critical condition.
The shooting occurred at about 4:45 p.m. in the 300 block of Centre St., outside of the city homeless shelter on the Fallsway. Police said officers were called there for a report of a robbery and saw the man, who matched the description of the robbery suspect, holding a gun - confirmed Monday to be a replica pellet gun - that he refused to drop.
He was shot multiple times, which some witnesses and bystanders on Friday said they believed was "unnecessary."
Police on Monday identified the officers involved in the shooting as Edward Mendez, a 14-year veteran, and Jacqueline Fillion, who has been with the agency since 2011. Neither officer has been involved in a prior shooting.
Police did not identify the man who was shot, citing pending criminal charges, but witnesses and homeless advocates say he was known as "C.J."
The incident remains under investigation.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
