The disappearance of the North Carolina teen slowly gained traction in the national media. In time thousands across the country were hanging on developments in the case.
Their worst fears were realized in April, when Phylicia Barnes' nude body was found floating about 40 miles east of Baltimore in the Susquehanna River. The missing persons case had become a homicide. Barnes, who was visiting her sisters, was an honors student and an athlete who hoped to graduate early and attend college here.
The mystery surrounding her disappearance was only heightened in July when federal agents filed documents in court indicating that they were exploring a child pornography angle. Since then, there's been little said, but family members remain hopeful.
