Though they aren't trumpeting it, the Baltimore Police Department's homicide unit has made several recent arrests in killings dating back to last year.
Police spokespeople said they did not know the motives behind the crimes.
The arrests are a boost to a unit whose work was questioned just last week at a hearing at City Hall. As of today, the homicide unit's clearance rate is 53 percent.
-The oldest case involves the killing of Justin Marasa, a 22-year-old from Kenya found shot in a vehicle April 8, 2012 in the 1400 block of Holbrook St. Police said William Hunt, 29, has been indicted on murder charges in the killing.
-Garrick Powell Jr., 20, of Gwynn Oak, has been charged with the killing of 21-year-old John Planters, who was found in a grassy lot in the 2200 block of Annapolis Road on Oct. 25, 2012. In late February, he was also indicted along with another man on two counts of attempted first-degree murder in an January 2013 shooting in the 1300 block of Broadway. And before that indictment he was already awaiting trial on two different drug distribution cases, records show.
-Sheldon Hopkins, 20, has been charged in the Nov. 12, 2012 killing of 28-year-old Donnell Bishop in the 1800 block of N. Rutland Ave.
-Terry Addison, 21, of Catonsville, has been charged in a triple shooting that occurred on Nov. 20, 2012 in the 2700 block of Greenmount Ave. Sixteen-year-old Daniel Pearson died in that shooting. Police have said that the violence that plagued the Greenmount Avenue late last year was tied to warring beteween the Bloods and Black Guerrilla Family gangs, but police could not give a motive in Addison's arrest or confirm whether it was gang-related.
-Cleveland Jones, 23, has been charged in the Feb. 3 killing of Christopher Samuels, 27, in the unit block of N. Wheeler St. Samuels had been shot in the head, police said.
-Charles Morris, 36, was charged in the Feb. 18 killing of David Armstrong in the 4300 block of Adelle Terrace. Armstrong was found fatally shot at the bottom of a stairwell.
-Anthony Todd, 44, has been charged in the March 2 killing of 43-year-old Kevin Gipson, who was fatally shot in the 1100 block of Barclay St. Gipson had been quoted days earlier in The Sun in stories about the "Camp 83" homeless community under I-83.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
