The 16-year-old honors student from North Carolina disappeared without a trace in late 2010 while visiting a relative in Northwest Baltimore, and after months of frantic searching her body was found in a river 40 miles northeast of the city in April 2011.
Police almost immediately suspected her sister's ex-boyfriend, the last person to see her alive, The charges filed against Michael Maurice Johnson exactly one year later were somewhat stunning - police have only said publicly that a witness reported seeing Johnson struggling to move a plastic tub, which prosecutors believe held Barnes' body.
The charges also came a day after the lead detective was suspended by the police department after allegedly conducting a rogue hunt for his own missing daughter. Johnson is scheduled to go to trial in January.
