Westminster's East Main Street closes after reports of gas leak

The overpressurization of a gas line caused businesses and homes along East Main Street in Westminster to be evacuated Monday afternoon, according to police chief Jeff Spaulding.

The police department shut down East Main Street between Longwell Avenue and Manchester Avenue about 12:45 p.m., after receiving multiple calls reporting the smell of gas in the area, Spaulding said.

BGE entered numerous homes and businesses and did find the smell of gas in some, but the problem "dissapated over time," Spaulding said.

Parts of East Main Street have been reopened as of 3:15 p.m., but Spaulding said he expects the road to remain closed between Church Street and Manchester Avenue "several more hours" as BGE continues to inspect buildings.
