Carroll Sheriff's Office arrests two after purse snatching

The Carroll County Sheriff's Office has arrested and charged two men after a woman's purse was stolen Thursday night outside of Westminster.

Police said that at approximately 10:55 p.m., a woman walking on the sidewalk from the Rite Aid at the Carroll Plaza Shopping Center was approached by two men, one of whom asked for a cigarette.

After complying with the request, police said one of the men grabbed her purse after a brief struggle, then ran.

Police said the man tripped and fell a short distance away and lost control of the purse. The purse was recovered by a nearby witness, according to police.

According to police reports, sheriff's deputies arrived just after 11 p.m. for a report of a purse snatching.

Police said deputies broadcast a description of the two men that matched two men who caught a short distance from the scene by Master Deputy Michael Fitzgerald.

Police said Paul Matthew Durkee, 42, of Marriottsville, and Shawn David Burgess, 35, of Westminster, were taken to Carroll County Central Booking to await a hearing before the District Court Commissioner on charges of robbery, assault, theft, and destruction of property.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Detective Dan Simmons at 410-386-2569, or the TIPS Hotline at 1-888-399-8477.
