Student ignites firework in Winters Mill bathroom

A 17-year-old Winters Mill High School student is accused of setting off an illegal firework in the bathroom of the men's locker room inside the school Thursday.

The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office announced in a news release Friday that the student has been charged with reckless endangerment, malicious destruction of property and discharge of fireworks without a permit.

At 11:30 a.m. Thursday school officials were notified by a concerned student after the firework was discharged in a toilet. Staff members located the damage and notified authorities of the incident, according to the Fire Marshal.

Damage from the explosion is estimated at $400, fire officials said.

The student was released to the custody of his parents pending actions by the Department of Juvenile Services, according to the release.
