Hampstead's Julia Pope helps propel McDaniel to soccer playoffs

Opening round is Tuesday; North Carroll grad has one goal, assist in 2-1 win over Dickenson

McDaniel College in Westminster will host Muhlenberg College (Pa.) in the first-round game of the 2013 Centennial Conference women's soccer championship on Tuesday. Game time is 2 p.m.

The fourth-seeded Green Terror team (13-5 overall, 6-4 in the conference) will face the fifth-seeded Mules (7-10-1, 5-5 in conference), with the winner advancing to Friday's semifinals at Johns Hopkins.

The Green Terror is seeking its first conference title.

McDaniel earned a berth in the playoffs based on Saturday’s 2-1 win over Dickinson College. In that game, Julia Pope of Hampstead led the Green Terror with a goal and an assist to propel the squad into the conference playoffs for the first time in program history.

In the regular-season meeting between the Green Terror and Mules, Muhlenberg prevailed, 1-0, in Westminster on Sept. 14.

For the regular season, freshman Nicole Hill of Bowie has led McDaniel with nine goals, six assists and 24 points.

Pope, a senior and graduate of North Carroll High School, had seven goals, five assists and 21 points during the reular season while sophomore Maggie Quinn of Crofton chipped in seven goals, five assists and 19 points. McDaniel ranks second in the conference in scoring with 45 goals.

Top-seeded Johns Hopkins (16-1-1 overall, 9-0-1 conference), ranked No. 6 in the latest NSCAA Division III coaches poll, and will host Tuesday's winner in Friday’s first semifinal, to begin at 5 p.m. Second-seeded Haverford will face third-seeded Gettysburg in the night's other semifinal.

The semifinal winners will advance to Saturday's championship game, which will begin at 5:30 p.m.

Whoever wins the tournament will earn the conference’s automatic bid to the 2013 NCAA Division III tournament, slated to begin on Nov. 15.
