Westminster man faces attempted murder charge after brother is shot

A Westminster man is facing multiple charges, including attempted first-degree murder, after police said he shot his brother Thursday.

Reno Louis Valianti, 38, is facing charges of first- and second-degree assault, reckless endangerment, use of a handgun in the commission of a felony, and attempted first- and second-degree murder, according to a Carroll County Sheriff's Office news release.

The Sheriff's Office and Maryland State Police responded to a reported domestic-related shooting on Sullivan Road in Westminster about 11:34 a.m. and found a man outside who had been shot in the abdomen, according to police.

Police said the victim, 33-year-old Michael Valianti, was alert and concious, but he was flown to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.

The victim underwent emergency surgery and is listed in critical but stable condition, according to the news release.

Reno Valianti was also found on scene and taken into custody as a suspect, police said.

He was transported by detectives to the Criminal Investigations Office to be interviewed. At about 4:30 p.m., he was taken to Carroll County Central Booking, where he will formally be charged in the shooting, according to police.
