Westminster cafe offers free coffee to government employees affected by shutdown

If you're a government employee who now has some time off of work due to the federal government shutdown and you're craving a cup of coffee, then Birdie's Cafe in Westminster may be the place for you.

Birdie's Cafe, at 233 East Main Street, is offering any government employee affected by the shutdown a free cup of coffee for as long as the shutdown lasts, according to owner Sherri Joseph.

They just need to present valid ID showing they are a government employee.

Joseph said she wanted to be supportive of federal employees affected by the government's decision and offer them support in any way possible.

"I just want to support the people who are suffering the backlash of what is going on in our government right now," she said.

Congress on Monday failed to pass a measure that would continue funding the government as some Republicans push for a delay in implementing the Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare. This is the first time the government has shut down since 1995-96.
