Mount Airy man in critical condition after hit-and-run

An 18-year-old Mount Airy man is in critical condition after a hit-and-run accident Saturday night in Taylorsville that the Maryland State Police is investigating.

Michael Hatfield is in critical condition at the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, hospital spokeswoman Cindy Rivers said Wednesday.

Maryland State Police received a report of a personal injury collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Liberty Road and Ridge Road in Taylorsville at about 11:42 p.m. Saturday, according to a state police news release.

Police said the preliminary investigation revealed that Hatfield was attempting to cross Liberty Road from the westbound side and that an unidentified vehicle traveling west hit him and left the scene.

Hatfield was flown by helicopter to Shock Trauma, according to police.

Police said one witness described the vehicle as a compact four-door car and a second witness described it as a blue or tan car, possibly a station wagon.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Trooper First Class Christopher Meekins at 410-386-3000.
