Children in Carroll County can spend Black Friday learning about Native Americans or engaging in athletic activities while their parents are occupied with shopping or working.

Charlotte's Quest Nature Center in Manchester is hosting a Fall Fun Day Nov. 29 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for ages 8 and older.

This is the first year the nature center at 3400 Wilhelm Lane, which typically has public programs on Fridays, will host the half-day event.

"We've not done it on Black Friday, ever," said Sherry Fisher, a naturalist at the center."The kids are off from school and we try to have public programs on Friday.. so we extended the hours."

The center's programs usually involve exploring nature and encourage hands-on activities and experiments to research about cleaning the Chesapeake Bay, how to use binoculars and more.

"In summer, we did an outdoor fun and fishing (event)," Fisher said. "This is close to Thanksgiving, so we will have Native American crafts, hikes and activities."

Fisher said participants will make a shelter outside as well as basic tools, and they will learn outdoor skills.

"It is a great way to talk about Native Americans since they inspired Thanksgiving in the beginning," Fisher said, who will bring authentic artifacts and musical instruments from her own collection.

Participants are asked to bring their own lunch. A snack will be provided.

Parents are not expected to stay.

"Wouldn't it be fun, having the kids go while you're out doing shopping?" Fisher said. "We have plenty of space."

Cost for Fall Fun Day is $15; $12 for members.

The Carroll County Recreation and Parks has hosted an "All Sports Day!" program on days off in the school calendar before.

That approach has been a successful one, according to Becky Kishter, community recreation specialist for the department.

Friday's all-day event, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., offers individual and team activities, including capture the flag, kickball and more.

The South Carroll Senior and Community Center, 5928 Mineral Hill Road, Sykesville, will host the event on Nov. 29.

There will also be giveaways throughout the day.

Cost is $50.
