A Hampstead woman has been indicted on multiple charges, including second-degree murder, in the drug-related death of her 4-year-old daughter in March, according to the Maryland State Police.
Paula Jane Shipley, 46, of the 1700 block of Mar Sue Drive in Hampstead, was arrested without incident at 9:40 a.m. Friday after a grand jury indictment Thursday, police announced in a news release.
Shipley was indicted for second-degree murder, first-degree child abuse leading to death, manslaughter, neglect of a minor and reckless endangerment, according to police.
Carroll County Sheriff's Deputies were dispatched March 21 to assist emergency medical service personnel with a 4-year-old child in cardiac arrest in the 100 block of Houck Road in Westminster. The child was transported to Carroll Hospital Center, where she was pronounced dead.
Police identified the victim as 4-year-old Cassandra Jane Shipley.
Autopsy results revealed that Cassandra died of a lethal dose of various narcotic drugs, and over-the-counter medications also were discovered in her system, police said.
Paula Shipley is being held at the Carroll County Detention Center awaiting a bond hearing, police said.
