Fire at Sykesville Middle School being investigated as potential arson

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating a fire in a shed at Sykesville Middle School that a preliminary investigation shows could be arson.

The fire occurred just after 8 p.m. Oct. 2 at Sykesville Middle, at 7301 Springfield Ave., according to the notice of investigation. The shed was a 12-by-24-foot, wood-framed shed.

No one was injured in the blaze, though the incident caused an estimated $5,000 in content loss and $5,000 in structure loss, according to the notice. The Sykesville-Freedom District volunteer fire company was the primary responding agency, and it took 15 firefighters about eight minutes to control the blaze.

The fire began on the exterior of the shed and the preliminary cause is incendiary, according to the notice.
