Not everyone has the space or resources for a backyard July Fourth barbecue, but The Shepherd’s Staff has you covered regardless. The Westminster nonprofit’s annual Fourth of July Cookout begins at noon Wednesday and is completely free.

“Our annual backyard cookout event is very special to us because we are able to celebrate the Fourth of July with those in the community that might not be able to host a cookout themselves,” The Shepherd’s Staff Executive Director Brenda Meadows is quoted as saying in a media release.

The cookout will be held at The Shepherd’s Staff’s office at 30 Carroll St., Westminster, and will feature live music, free shoes and, of course, food.

“We will have hamburgers, hot dogs — all of your Fourth of July favorites,” said The Shepherd’s Staff Marketing Manager Ellen Nestorick. “The Kona Ice truck will be here offering free shaved ice to everyone.”

The Cedarhurst Unitarian Universalists will be providing the food items while Ian’s Boots, a nonprofit from Pottstown, Pennsylvania, will also be on hand to offer free summer shoes for those that need them, according to Nestorick.

“Events like this wouldn’t be possible without the support from local organizations and our many volunteers,” Meadows is quoted as saying.

That goes for the live music as well, which will be provided by musicians from the Common Ground on the Hill festival being held at McDaniel College.

The cookout is a tradition at least two decades old, according to Nestorick.

“We think it was started in 1997,” she said, “so it’s been at least the past 20 years.”

In 2017, the event drew 275 people from the community, Nestorick said, and with volunteers at the ready, The Shepherd’s Staff hopes to have a big turn out again this year.

“It takes place in our side yard, and we set up tents and everything,” she said. “It’s a really strong volunteer-driven event. We are just lucky to have the volunteers we do have supporting it.”
