Westminster man charged in relation to assault, drug possession

A Westminster man was arrested July 8 in relation to an alleged assault.

Maurice Johnson Jr., 30, of the 100 block of Westminster, was charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, two counts of possession of a substance that isn’t marijuana and possession of contraband in a place of confinement, according to the statement of probable cause.

At about 2:42 a.m., an officer with the Westminster Police Department was called to the 100 block of Pennsylvania Ave. for a report of a possible assault, according to the statement. Upon arrival, the officer observed a woman come out of the residence, who was visibly upset and crying, according to the statement.

The officer also saw another person, later identified as Johnson, run out after the woman and yell at her before sitting on a chair on the front porch, according to the statement.

The officer attempted to separate the two, and asked Johnson to walk down the sidewalk with him, but Johnson refused because he only had one shoe on and no shirt, according to the statement. He then asked the woman to leave the residence while he talked to Johnson.

Johnson said he came into the residence and the woman began to yell at him and physically attacked him, according to the statement. Johnson said the woman scratched him and “went crazy.”

The officer noted in his report that he was unable to observe any injuries on Johnson, according to the statement.

The officer spoke with the woman, who said Johnson came home intoxicated about an hour prior and began to yell at her, and then physically assault her, according to the statement. The woman said she told Johnson to leave and he began to swing at her with a closed fist, according to the statement.

The woman said she used her forearms to block the strikes, but Johnson was able to hit her once around her left eye. The officer did observe the woman’s face was red, swollen and raised, according to the statement.

The woman also said when she told Johnson she was going to call the police, he said, “I’m going to kill you,” according to the statement. The woman said Johnson the grabbed her by the neck and began choking her until she had trouble breathing. According to the statement, the woman said she thought Johnson was going to kill her.

The officer noted in his report the woman had red, raised abrasions on her neck.

The officer arrested Johnson and upon entering the facility, a corrections officer asked Johnson if he had any weapons, controlled substances or paraphernalia. Johnson refused to answer and became uncooperative, according to the statement.

Johnson was secured in the facility and another check was done, at which point a corrections officer found three small sealed plastic baggies, each containing heroin, and another bag, which contained cocaine, according to the statement.

Johnson was held without bond and has a preliminary inquiry scheduled for 8:45 a.m. Aug. 8.
