Westminster man charged with first-degree assault

A Westminster man was arrested Thursday after an alleged physical altercation with a woman.

Johnnie Matos, 58, of the unit block of Pennsylvania Avenue, was charged with one count each of first- and second-degree assault. He is being held without bail following a Friday bail review, according to electronic court records.

According to the statement of probable cause, an officer of the Westminster Police Department responded to a residence on Thursday and spoke to a woman who told police that a verbal argument had resulted in a physical altercation.

She told police Matos struck her face with a closed fist and placed hands on her neck, according to the statement.

Police observed injuries including abrasions to her face and chest, bruising and hoarseness of voice. Police made contact with Matos who said there had been a physical altercation. He did not appear to suffer injury, according to the statement.

No court scheduling information was available as of 5 p.m. Friday.
