Maryland State Fair entertains through Labor Day weekend

Labor Day means the tail end of summer for many, and also the wrap-up of the Maryland State Fair, where many Carroll residents have traveled to Timonium to compete, present or just enjoy some fair food and a few midway games.

The schedule for the final weekend still involves plenty for those visiting before Monday, Sept. 3.

Classic rock group Jefferson Starship plays Saturday and country singer-songwriter Chris Janson plays Sunday at the LIVE! OnTrack! Infield.

Jefferson Starship, the San Francisco-based rock band that has gone through countless iterations over the years is touring in advance of a new album anticipated in 2019.

Janson, of “Buy me a Boat” fame, has written songs for Tim McGraw and is a member of the Grand Ole Opry.

Concert grounds open at 6:30 p.m. and shows begin at 7:30 p.m. A full list of FAQs for concert-goers is available at the State Fair website.

Live music is also played nightly on the Park Free Stage.

Family-friendly events happen all throughout the day, from the time the fair opens at 9 a.m. to the evening concerts and brewery tastings. With exhibits including honey harvesting, cow milking, slime making and gardening, there’s a chance for education.

If the livestock showing is not enough animal action, mornings may be the best time to check out the antics at Goat Mountain, where the animals roam free in a natural habitat.

Gothrup Glass, the mobile glass studio that brought their demonstrations and educational spin to the Carroll County 4-H and FFA Fair will also be on hand, making everything from cowboy hats to vases.

Mechanical bull riding will take place from noon to 10 p.m. for aspiring cowboys and gals. Stetson not required, but welcome.

A perennial favorite of many kids, the Swifty Swine Racing & Swimming Pigs will hold races throughout the day.

New this year are helicopter rides from Charm City Helicopters. The 5-6 minute flights, $45 each, take off from the Live! OnTrack! Infield, and fly over the fairgrounds, the I-83 Baltimore County corridor, and the Martin Marietta Quarry.

Live thoroughbred racing will take place Friday through Monday with post time at 1 p.m. Simulcast racing is also available daily in the Grandstand and OTB.

The classic midway and the children’s area open each day at 10 a.m.

Monday, as a Labor Day special, unlimited ride wristbands will be available for purchase from 10 a.m. — 6 p.m. and can be used until close at 10 p.m.

Fair admission is $10 for adults, $8 for ages 62 and older, $8 for children 6-11 and free for children younger than five. Midway rides are separate from fair admission.

The fairgrounds are located at 2200 York Road, Lutherville-Timonium. More information and a full schedule of events is available at marylandstatefair.com.
