Sykesville house fire extinguished by occupant

A fire in the 7500 block of Braemer Court in Sykesville was reported just after 8 a.m. Saturday morning, but was extinguished by the home’s occupant with the help of a garden hose.

No injuries were reported as a result of the incident. Firefighters determined that the fire had been extinguished upon arrival.

Investigators estimated smoke and fire damage of $7,000 to the structure and contents of the single family home, according to a notice of investigation from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.

According to the notice, preliminary investigation suggests that the cause was accidental, due to discarded smoking material. The home’s occupant observed smoke and discovered a wicker table. Friends and family assisted, and were able to extinguish it using a container of water and later a garden hose.
