New Windsor firefighter injured when hose bursts

A Carroll County volunteer firefighter was flown to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center after a hose burst and struck him Friday afternoon at a fire scene, officials said.

The injuries are not life-threatening, said Byron Welker, assistant chief of the volunteer New Windsor Fire Department. "He's doing very well," Welker said. "He's being kept overnight at Shock Trauma for observation."

The injured firefighter, Richard Hooper, was in serious condition Friday evening, said hospital spokeswoman Cindy Rivers.

Hooper was operating an engine pump at a house fire when the hose burst. The department is investigating the cause, Welker said.
