Donna L. Zaccaonini, a retired newspaper office manager and veteran political worker, died of an aneurysm Sept. 9 at her Taneytown home. She was 54.

Donna Lee Ervin was born in Baltimore and raised in Glen Burnie.

She was a 1973 graduate of Glen Burnie High School and attended Anne Arundel Community College and Villa Julie College.

From 1975 to 1978, she worked in the Washington office of Maryland Republican Sen. Charles McC. Mathias Jr., and from 1978 until 1982 was a community worker for Anne Arundel County Executive Robert Pascal.

She was Towson Times office manager for four years until retiring for health reasons in 1984.

"Donna was one of those backroom political people who knew more about what was going on and when it was right to pull the lever," said Helen Delich Bentley, the former congresswoman and chairwoman of the Federal Maritime Commission, and longtime friend.

"Even through her illnesses, she found time to work on my campaign in 2002," Mrs. Bentley recalled.

The former longtime Towson resident had been an avid dancer. She also enjoyed collecting leaded crystal, especially examples of Swarovski, which is made in Wattens, Austria.

She was also a member of the Swarovski Collectors Society.

Services were held Sunday at Ruck Towson Funeral Home.

Surviving are her husband of 32 years, Dan Zaccaonini; her mother and stepfather, Anna and Roy Reck Sr. of Shallotte, N.C.; four brothers, Donald Ervin of Shallotte, Earl Ervin of Fredericksburg, Va., Vick Ervin Jr. of Bowie and Michael Ervin of Glen Burnie; a stepbrother, Roy Reck Jr. of Frederick; three stepsisters, Andi Fulton of Severna Park, Sandra Pinder of Centreville, and Patricia Allred of Palm Day, Fla.; and four step-grandchildren.
