No. 2 Bryn Mawr had to go to overtime Wednesday before the Mawrtians found a way to survive No. 8 Notre Dame Prep, 3-2, when junior Sophie Freeman scored the first goal of her high school career.

"They're a top 10 team and we're a top 10 team," Bryn Mawr coach Jeanette Budzik said. "This is the way this game should be played."

Both teams had ample opportunities to win after NDP scored two second-half goals to tie midway through the second half. But the game wasn't decided until Bryn Mawr senior Molly Danko — the team's leading scorer, who was shut out Wednesday — raced down the sidelines with 1:57 to play. She dodged NDP defenders and drew a corner opportunity that led to Freeman's game-winning score with 1:06 left.

"Molly was instrumental in overtime," Budzik said. "She was playing full speed and she made one extra push at the end to get the jump on the defender and we got the corner. It shows when you give your all, it counts for something."

Freeman was also making a final push. She managed to get position behind NDP's goalie to be in the perfect spot to take advantage of Danko's work and a pass by Caroline Joy.

"It was a lot of running and I was exhausted," Freeman said, of the 7-on-7 overtime. "But everyone was supporting me. I got behind the goalie and it worked just like in practice. It was my first goal in high school ever. I just made the switch from defender to midfield this year."

Bryn Mawr senior Eliza Clemens scored twice in the first half for a 2-0 lead and then NDP junior Maggie Sands and senior Anne Federico tied it for the Blazers midway through the second half.

The game was important in the Interscholastic Athletic Association of Maryland standings, where both Bryn Mawr (7-0, 4-0 IAAM) and Notre Dame Prep (3-2 in both) are battling for supremacy with unbeaten Garrison Forest (7-0, 6-0).

"We're better than that [result]," NDP coach Maggie Anton said. "Much, much better. ... We came out flat and only played half the game. They're pretty upset by it, but they've learned a lesson. Bryn Mawr played hard, was good at dodging and finished their corners."
