Towson University announced the coast was clear after a possible gunman was seen on campus near a student parking lot on Cross Campus Drive Monday night.
In a series of tweets and campus text alerts, the university described the subject as a heavyset, 5-foot-10, white man in his 20s, wearing a black coat, green backpack, wool cap and possibly having a silver pistol.
Baltimore County police said they assisted university police in searching the area, but a Towson University tweet said nothing was found.
"Police have determined the area is clear," the last tweet said, around 9:40 p.m. "You may resume normal activity."
The false alarm comes after Towson saw an uncommon stretch of crime last month that led police to step up patrols in the area.
Two Towson students were robbed at gunpoint on Nov. 17, after five street robberies in the first week of the month, including one that left a Towson student stabbed and seriously injured. Those incidents occurred off campus.
