Del. Steve Schuh has picked up the endorsement of former lieutenant governor and Republican National Committee Chairman Michael Steele in his bid to become Anne Arundel County executive next year.

Schuh, a two-term Republican delegate from Gibson Island, is trying to unseat GOP County Executive Laura Neuman. She was appointed in February after John R. Leopold resigned following his conviction of misconduct in office.

Schuh's campaign released a statement from Steele praising Schuh as a leader who can help grow the Republican Party in Anne Arundel County. Steele said Schuh is "an effective, conservative voice" in Annapolis.

"He has paid his dues for many years by helping to elect Republicans throughout the state by volunteering on campaigns, contributing to candidates and party organizations, and participating in clubs and events," Steele said.

In addition to serving as lieutenant governor from 2003 to 2007 and as RNC chairman from 2009 to 2011, Steele ran unsuccessfully for U.S. Senate in 2006.

Steele's endorsement is the latest for Schuh, who has been endorsed by U.S. Rep. Andy Harris, former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., former first lady Kendel Ehrlich and a number of Republican state legislators.

Schuh's only announced opponent in the Republican primary is Neuman. County Councilman John Grasso of Glen Burnie had announced a run last year, but decided this summer to run for re-election to the County Council instead.
