Ruth S. Garretson

Ruth S. Garretson, a registered nurse and volunteer, died Aug. 30 of brain cancer at the Bay Woods Retirement Community in Annapolis.

The longtime Severna Park resident was 85.

The daughter of a Methodist minister and a homemaker, Ruth Spry was born in Pittsville, Wicomico County.

Because of her father's work, she was raised in Dagsboro, Del., Smyrna, Del., Denton and Laurel, where she graduated in 1942 from Laurel High School.

After graduating from what was then Western Maryland College in 1946, she earned her nursing degree from Union Memorial Hospital School of Nursing.

Mrs. Garretson worked in pediatric nursing at Union Memorial until her 1961 marriage to William "Bill" Garretson, a wire and cable industry executive.

The couple lived in Bethesda, Lincolnshire, Ill., Wellesley, Mass., and Morristown, N.J., before settling in Severna Park in 1982.

Mr. Garretson died in 2006.

While living in New Jersey, Mrs. Garretson served as president of TWIG Women's Association of Morristown Memorial Hospital.

She had been a longtime member of Meals on Wheels of Central Maryland and was an active member of the First Presbyterian Church of Annapolis.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. today at her church, West Street and State Circle.

Surviving are a son, Bill Garretson of Los Angeles; a daughter, Meg Carter of Alexandria, Va.; two sisters, Peggy Cadell of Easton and Genevieve McGee of Lewes, Del.; and two grandchildren.
