Man shot, gravely wounded near Pimlico

A man was shot and killed Saturday just a few blocks from the Pimlico racetrack where crowds were gathered for the Preakness Stakes, police said.

Officers went to the corner of W. Belvedere and Elmira avenues at 4:30 to investigate a shooting. The victim was taken to the hospital, but homicide detectives were called because of the seriousness of his injuries, police said. The man later died of his injuries, said Sergeant Sarah E. Connolly. She said the shooting was unrelated to Preakness.

Spots of blood marked the sidewalk and the street after the shooting.

There was a large police presence in the area for the horse race, and a witness who asked only to be named as Shanika said she couldn't understand why it took officers 10 minutes to come to the scene.

"They didn't do anything until someone called the police," she said.

The victim's friends took him to the hospital, she said.

In a separate incident, police said just after 4 p.m. that a man was shot in the leg at Old York Road and 35th street.iduncan@baltsun.com
