A man was shot and killed Saturday just a few blocks from the Pimlico racetrack where crowds were gathered for the Preakness Stakes, police said.
Officers went to the corner of W. Belvedere and Elmira avenues at 4:30 to investigate a shooting. The victim was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced death about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Police do not believe the incident had any connection to the Preakness racing.
Officers were still gathered at the scene a half hour after the shooting, and spots of blood marked the sidewalk and the street.
There was a large police presence in the area for the horse race, and a witness who asked only to be named as Shanika said she couldn't understand why it took officers 10 minutes to come to the scene.
"They didn't do anything until someone called the police," she said.
The victim's friends took him to the hospital, she said.
In a separate incident, police said just after 4 p.m. that a man was shot in the leg at Old York Road and 35th street.
