Baltimore police have named the officer who fatally shot a man Tuesday afternoon as 32-year-old John Hanyok, a seven-year department veteran who had no previous shooting involvement.

Hanyok shot Jonathan D. Blankenship, 40, after a confrontation at a home in North Baltimore's Medfield neighborhood, officials said. Police officials said an officer responded to a report of a family disturbance at a townhouse in the 1400 block of N. Weldon Place.

When the officer sounded a distress call, responding officers saw a man struggling with the first officer with a knife nearby, according to spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. Hanyok fired at least once and struck Blankenship, who was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead, Guglielmi said.
