The remains of Lance Cpl. Eugene C. Mills III, 21, of Laurel, who was known by some of his Marine comrades as "Gino Bambino," were scheduled to arrive at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del., shortly before noon Monday, according to a family friend.

On Friday, Mills was killed in combat in the Helmand province of Afghanistan as a Marine assigned to 1st Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Lejeune, N.C.

He was the fifth service member from Maryland killed this year, and the fourth to die in Afghanistan.

When Mills' body arrives at Dover, a small service will be held, according to Chuck Glunt, business manager at the Laurel American Legion Post, where members of the Mills family are active.

Mills had always wanted to be a Marine, family friends said.

"He was a very well-liked young man, and he loved his country and he really loved and believed in his mission. He really couldn't wait to be a Marine," said Gregory Sweitzer, who worked with Mills' father, Gene Mills, for years as aPrince George's Countypolice officer.

"It's just one of those things that is beyond belief, that you have to deal with," Sweitzer said of Mills' death.

Glunt said Mills' body will first be received by the Dover Air Force Base morgue, then transferred to Maryland later this week.

The family could not be reached for comment. Funeral arrangements have not been announced.
