One injured, deck burned in Columbia house fire

A house fire in Columbia before dawn Tuesday morning caused an estimated $5,000 in damage, according to the Howard County Department of Fire & Rescue Services.

Firefighters responded just before 2 a.m. to the blaze at the home in the 10600 block of Rain Dream Hill in Columbia, where they found the deck on the back of the home burning, the department said.

One resident of the home had minor injuries but refused medical treatment, officials said.

Crews quickly extinguished the fire, which had been contained to the outside of the home, the department said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, but preliminary evidence pointed to the improperly discarded ashes, fire department spokeswoman Maria Hogg said.
