A Mount Airy man was arrested Monday on suspicion that he might have fatally stabbed his father after a violent fight spilled onto the lawn of the home that the pair shared.

Joseph W. Pine, 31, of 706 Bridlewreath Way, was expected to be charged Tuesday with first and second degree murder according to Greg Shipley, a spokesman for the Maryland State Police.

The suspect's father, Michael J. Pine, 63, was found slumped on his front porch at 3 p.m. Monday with "obvious trauma" to his upper torso, Shipley said. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after police received a 911 call from a neighbor who reported that a fierce fight was taking place.

Police said at one point, the father seemed to have bolted out the front door in an attempt to save his life, pursued by his son.

An autopsy will be conducted to determine exactly how Michael J. Pine died, but Shipley said preliminary evidence indicates that he might have been stabbed with one or more knives.

Joseph W. Pine was standing outside his home when troopers arrived and surrendered peacefully, Shipley said. He was undergoing a medical and psychological evaluation Monday night at Carroll Hospital Center in Westminster. Depending on the results of that evaluation, additional charges may be filed.

The father and son apparently were the only two people living at that address, Shipley said, and no one else was inside the home when the fight broke out.

Shipley said that there is no previous record of any domestic violence disputes in the home.
